Katydid Designs, Inc. began with a little creativity and the art of sewing. Inspired by a silk
wove skirt, Kate Merrell created the first hand woven ribbon bag on her dinning room table. The
sewing project originated as a way for Kate to relax after a hard semester in college. But the
request for the bags quickly grew beyond her sisters and friends. |
The Katydid name was given to Kate at a young Age by her grandfather. Although she had not
been called such in recent years, she found this to be fitting for the bags. Katydids are large
winged, singing insects that belong to the grasshopper family. The courtship between the male and
female katydid create a song the sounds like Katy did, Katy didn't, hence the name. The insect is
normally green or gray, but there are rare occurrences of being pink. And since Kate is a true
Florida Girl, who lives and loves Pink, the company name was a perfect match. |

During her last two years of college, Kate turned her design idea into a fully functioning
business, including a growing staff. Upon graduation in 2004, Kate decided to follow her dream
and expand the Katydid Company. So with her accounting degree in hand, Kate set off to her hometown
of West Palm Beach to run the business full time.
Katydid Designs, Inc. now offers a full line of grosgrain ribbon bags, belts, headbands,
jewelry and other accessorizes. Kate Merrell, along with her several seamstresses, create
and manage all aspects of the business. Katydid Designs takes pride in producing high quality,
unique and hand crafted accessorizes. |
